Weapon modding guide: the build logic
Copying a build without understanding it means breaking it the moment one mod is missing. Here is the logic behind 99% of weapon builds — distilled from the best FR and EN video guides (credits below) and verified in our arsenal simulator, where every rule on this page is computed live.
The universal recipe (in order)
- ONE base damage mod — Serration (rifle), Hornet Strike (secondary), Point Blank (shotgun), Pressure Point (melee). Just one: extras bring diminishing returns, everything else multiplies.
- Multishot — Split Chamber, then its Galvanized version as soon as you can (it's not an alternative, it's a replacement). Works on 99% of weapons.
- Crit, always as a pair — crit chance (Point Strike) + crit damage (Vital Sense). One without the other wastes the slot.
- 1–2 elements — 90% mods for raw damage, 60/60 mods for status builds. Pick the combined element for the enemy (table below).
- The rest as needed — status, fire rate, reload, Riven… that's your flex zone.
Melee: same spirit, with attack speed high on the list, then Blood Rush + Organ Shatter (combo crit), Weeping Wounds (combo status) and Reach.
Thresholds that matter
- Status > 100% = multiple procs: 200% = 2 guaranteed effects per hit. Status never "wastes".
- Crit tiers: 100% = guaranteed (yellow) crits, 200% = orange, 300% = red — each tier multiplies further. Aiming above 100% makes your damage consistent.
- Viral multiplies health damage up to +325% at 10 stacks; Corrosive strips up to 80% armor; Heat merges its burns into one refreshing stack.
Which element against whom?
Since the damage rework (Update 36), each faction has simple vulnerabilities: ×1.5 if vulnerable, ×0.5 if resistant.
- Grineer / Scaldra: Impact, Corrosive
- Corpus: Puncture, Magnetic (or Toxin to bypass shields entirely)
- Infested: Slash, Heat
- Corrupted (Orokin): Puncture, Viral — resist Radiation
- Murmur: Electricity, Radiation — resist Viral
- Techrot: Magnetic, Gas — resist Cold
The all-purpose meta duo remains Viral + Heat (or Viral + Slash on crit weapons): Viral inflates health damage, Heat burns and melts armor. Our arsenal applies these multipliers to the effective DPS against the target you pick.
The traps that ruin a build
- Slot order matters: elements combine left to right. The same mods placed differently produce a DIFFERENT combined element — that's THE reason copied builds "hit weaker". Check the result live in the simulator.
- Stacking base damage mods: no. One base, the rest multiplies.
- A single crit mod "to try": the pair or nothing.
- Melee without combo: without combo duration (Drifting Contact) and Blood Rush, you hit for nothing.
- Forgetting the Orokin Catalyst: without it, half your mod capacity doesn't exist.
- Overpaying a Riven: the meta rotates, prices collapse. The higher the weapon's disposition, the harder the Riven hits.
Going expert
Galvanized mods (20 Vitus Essence at the Arbiters) replace their classic versions: same bonuses, plus on-kill stacks that make them explode in long missions. Weapon arcanes (Merciless, Deadhead…) add one more multiplicative layer — our arsenal's auto-build equips them for you, and the "max stacks" toggle shows the full potential.
⚙ Put the logic to work: open the arsenal simulator, pick your weapon, hit "Auto build" and watch every rule on this page apply — then tweak and compare, stats move live.
